Velo For All

It’s no secret that Mill District Velo has put together some of the best rides in Sonoma County. The spring calendar is packed with weekly ride event offerings that span the spectrum from casual to high performance. Looking for a family recreational “roll” with other community members? Or maybe you’re a weekend warrior looking to network with others and enjoy pushing some of the hills.

“Our rides have always been inclusive but we’re always trying to optimize and better how we cater to each genre of cyclist,” said Laura King, who is married to pro cyclist and Mill District Ambassador Ted King.

Mill District Velo also has added some new routes to the mix. The first, dubbed “Toasters,” is a riff on the popular Marin County ride nicknamed “Roasters,” and it’s aimed at the fastest and most skilled riders in our group. The Toaster’s Rides will head west from Healdsburg and traverse some of the most spectacular terrain in Sonoma County.

Another brand-new trio of rides: Cycling Chef Series.

As King explains it, these rides incorporate a bike ride guided by cycling personalities and an exquisite meal prepared by a chef who also happens to be an avid cyclist. These rides are $125 each or $350 for all three. Participating chefs include Ari Weiswasser of Glen Ellen Star in Glen Ellen, Matthew Accarrino of Mattina/SQPR in San Francisco and John McConnell of Clif Family Winery in Yountville.

Also new this year, Mill District Velo has put together a weekend-long event just for women. The $295 per person Grit + Luxe event will comprise 60-75 miles of riding, foods, inspiration with guest speakers, and more.

In addition, Mill District Velo will be collaborating with Healdsburg Running Company on the running shop’s first Critical Mass outing of the year. Critical Mass is a mass bicycle ride that takes place on the last Friday of each month in cities around the world. Here in Healdsburg, the ride will take place on Friday, March 31, at 5 p.m., starting and ending at Mill District.

Critical Mass rides are the ultimate in inclusivity; riders are invited to bring beach cruisers, fixer-uppers, road bikes, or mountain bikes. The only rule: Show up ready to ride. Email naomi@milldistricthealdsburg.com if you are interested in joining us.

“We want everybody to feel part of something special,” said King. We couldn’t agree more.

I got into cycling in 2007 when my sister Rachel told me to buy a bike so we could ride together. We have spent most of our lives doing everything together so it just made sense that we would become cyclists together.
